Faculty III - Process Sciences - Institute of Energy Technology / Dept. of Community Energy and Adaptation to Climate Change

Research Assistant - salary grade E13 TV-L Berliner Hochschulen

Part-time employment may be possible; under the reserve that funds are granted
.
Our research and project work at the Department of Community Energy and Adaptation to Climate Change focuses on systemic, economic and societal considerations of Community Energy, Renewable Energy Transformations in rural, remote and humanitarian contexts. Bottom-up community concepts based on local needs and requirements play a central role. Through critical analysis and an interdisciplinary team of engineers, economists and social scientist, we investigate impactful and sustainable concepts depending on the local needs, priorities and resources. We collaborate with international partners in the areas of research, development cooperation, private sector and public organizations at various levels. Further information can be found at https://www.tu.berlin/en/ceacc.
.
This position is funded by the EU project ENERGICA (https://energica-h2020.eu/). With its 11 European and 17 African partners, the ENERGICA project is fostering collaboration between European and African partners on energy access and sustainable energy development while developing innovative and tailored approaches on productive use through innovative nano-grids in rural Madagascar, low-tech biogas coupled with water purification demonstrated in peri-urban Sierra Leone, and solar-powered e-mobility for bodaboda in urban Kenya. From energy generation, energy communities, local energy transition boards, local renewable value chain development, e-mobility and flexibility services to the grid, the project concepts and findings translate to a variety of technical and socio-economic contexts.
The main objective of the project is to demonstrate the impactful implementation of renewable energies matching local needs, to reach a powerful market uptake and a wide replication during and beyond the project duration, with strong envirorimental and socioeconomic local benefits. Activities center around the connection of relevant actors, the understanding of local needs as well as the co-design of adapted solutions. Energy Transition Boards (ETB) are being formed in the three contexts in order to guide the creation of lntegrated Community Energy Systems (ICESs).

Tasks

The scope of the position to be filled relates to project tasks within the European research project ENERGICA (https://energica-h2020.eu/). This includes scientific studies of the systemic, economic, ecological and political framework conditions for community energy initiatives in Madagascar, Kenya and Sierra Leone. Based on these studies, innovative and effective approaches for access to energy in rural, semi-rural and urban communities will be developed. In particular, the work involves studies on scaling up the approaches in the three project countries as well as on the transferability and replicability of the approaches in 15 other African countries.

Requirements

  • successfully completed scientific university studies (Master, Diplom or equivalent) in engineering, industrial engineering or similar studies with a focus on renewable energies or comparable orientation and with above-average achievements
  • good knowledge of German and/or English required; willingness to acquire the respective missing language skills

Desirable:

  • knowledge of German and of French
  • prior knowledge of energy access in remote and humanitarian contexts
  • prior knowledge of decentralized renewable energy
  • experience in writing scientific publications
  • experience in working on international research projects
